What do F1, F1B, and F2 mean?
These labels describe a puppy’s ancestry. They are not quality ratings.
F1 - first generation
F1 Cockapoo: Cocker Spaniel × Poodle.
F1 Cavapoo: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel × Poodle.
This is a 50/50 parentage combination, but it does not mean every puppy will show an equal blend of each parent’s appearance or personality.
F1B - first generation backross
An F1 puppy is bred back to one of the original parent breeds. The “B” stands for backcross.
F1B Cockapoo: F1 Cockapoo × Poodle.
F1B Cavapoo: F1 Cavapoo × Poodle.
A backcross to a Poodle has approximately 75% Poodle and 25% spaniel ancestry on average. A backcross can also be to the spaniel breed, so the actual parents should always be specified.
F2 - second generation
An F2 puppy comes from two F1 parents of the same cross.
F2 Cockapoo: F1 Cockapoo × F1 Cockapoo.
F2 Cavapoo: F1 Cavapoo × F1 Cavapoo.
The ancestry averages approximately 50% spaniel and 50% Poodle, but inherited traits can combine in different ways. Puppies within the same litter may differ in coat and appearance.
Which generation is best?
No generation is automatically best for every family. Health, the parents’ temperaments, and the individual puppy matter more than the generation alone. Lower shedding does not mean allergy-free. No dog is guaranteed to be 100% hypoallergenic, and individual reactions vary.
